Five Major Health Myths

Understand these myths and avoid disease naturally!
1. Heart disease, stroke and cancer are unavoidable. False. While it is true these three are the biggest threats to our health and are responsible for 70% of all deaths, there is good news. In most cases, these diseases are avoidable! Why leave it up to chance? Instead, choose to be healthy. Read on to learn practical steps to vibrant health and vitality at any age. Protecting you and your family's future is not as difficult as you think.

The Coronary Health Improvement Project (CHIP) is a programme to change how you eat, live, move and think in a way  that will help you avoid these deadly diseases. Find a programme near you in New Zealand or in the world or watch a 5 minute video introducing CHIP to learn more.

2. I've started medication, I'll never be able to come off of them. Not necessarily. Lifestyle change has been proven to reduce insulin requirements (and the need for other medications). If you have already started medications, have diabetes or had heart surgery or a stroke, it's not too late. You can take charge of your health and drastically reduce your risk or reverse disease by your health choices. (Warning: Never stop taking any prescribed medications without the advice of your doctor.)

Taking medication is necessary while living the typical western lifestyle, but with better eating habits and exercise, chronic heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes improve and medication requirements often lessen. In 4 weeks on a healthier lifestyle programme (like the Coronary Health Improvement Project) 80% of participants reduce their risk of heart attack by 50%. The majority lower their blood pressure if needed and up to 50% will no longer need insulin. This is something medication alone can rarely accomplish!

3. I feel fine. I can wait for the first sign of illness before seeing a doctor and starting to take care of my health. False. More often than not, the first warning of heart disease is sudden death. Don't wait until it is too late!

4. A diet will help me lose weight quickly and feel good about myself. False. Diets create a yo-yo pattern of weight loss and gain. In the end, most people who diet end up weighing more than when they started.

5. Cigarettes are the biggest known cause of cancer. False. It has been said that we are eating ourselves into an early grave. Which, unfortunately, is quite true. As we all know, cigarette smoking is deadly (30% of all cancer deaths). But few of us know how deadly our eating habits are! The typical diet alone (processed, high-fat, high sugar food), is responsible for an estimated 35% of all cancer deaths! And that's just the effect of diet on cancer, not to mention the clear effect of diet in other diseases such as diabetes, heart attacks, strokes, obesity and high blood pressure.

6. If heart disease runs in my family, I'm going to get it to so why bother trying to be healthy. False. In reality, genetics are only responsible for 10% or less of these chronic (or lifestyle) diseases. Our choices, not our genes, determine most of our health outcomes. Getting active and losing just a few kilograms can dramatically improve blood pressure, blood sugar, risk of heart attack, diabetes and stroke.

Making better choices for your health in eating well, exercise and stress reduction can dramatically reduce your risk of heart attack, stroke, cancer, diabetes, obesity and many more of the lifestyle related diseases. The easiest approach to health is often ignored because of its simplicity. Don't choose an expensive, flashy diet that makes impossible claims.  Instead choose a lifestyle programme that you can sustain. The effect on your health will be far more powerful and much safer than any medication or other treatment currently available.
